Sketch Dump

I haven't posted in so long, I felt compelled to dig something up I did recently to make up for it. Here's a random sketch I did of Hugh Laurie and Wilford Brimley from when I was bored. Diabeetus.

Paintings.

I figured I'd post something new here since I haven't posted anything in a while. I've been bogged down with school and a commission. Here's the commission I am working on though. Not the greatest photos of them, I'll have to take new ones before sending them to the client.
These are prototypes for a card game, I have to do three paintings. This of the warrior and thief characters. The third is a mage. It's drawn, but i haven't started painting it.
I don't have any photos of the warrior WIP, but it is now finished. I'm almost done with the thief. I finished everything in the background and started on the underpainting in the skin tones. He'll have a brighter tan tone by the time I'm done with it.
I'm eager to be done with this job so I can get back to some of my personal projects that I've been neglecting.

Back to working on my Napoleonic hero again. Just working on the sky for this time.

Saladin WIP Update

I'm trying something different with this Saladin pic. I'm finishing it in grayscale first, and then painting it in color. I wanted to concentrate on value because I think I neglect shadow a bit sometimes. Either way this is the black and white version. I'll get to working on color next.

School Work

I decided to post some work from school here. This is for my intro to anatomy class. These are studies of the rib cage and pelvis area (hence less detail in the arms and legs)

This is a bit old-ish, but figured I'd post something here. I've been busy moving into a new house and doing school work over the past week and a half. I'll get to working on this again soon because I really want to see this finished.

Saladin WIP

Okay so I lied on the last post. I'm going to work on the Elven Archer a little bit more before calling it done. There's an issue with the bushes that's still bothering me.
In the meantime I took a break from it for a while to work on this. It was an old challenge on Concept Art that I decided to take a stab at. It was to do your own interpretation of Saladin, the famous general from the crusades. I thought it might be a nice change of pace since what I usually draw is just pretty women.

Goblin Forest Finished!

(Formerly called Archer In Forest). Here's the final product of it. I'm glad I got some help on it while I was working on it. Some people on Concept Art were kind enough to give me some feedback in the forum.

Here's a two-fer for today. :D The elven archer isn't quite done yet, but I took a break from it to work on another work. This is from the Character of the Week challenge at Concept Art. The challenge is a Napoleonic naval hero. I figured I'd jump out of my comfort zone and make something for it.

A self portrait since I haven't done one in a long time. It's supposed to be a look of concentration, but I think it turned out more like WTF than anything else.

Archer WIP 4

Here's part four of my work in progress. I decided to go back and redo the bushes since I got some crit that they looked too streaky. I also added some texture to the tree bark to give it some texture. Most of the night was actually spent redoing the trees and bushes.
I also started working on the water. I added two goblins, or whatever you want to call them. It's just what I had in my head, and that was the closest thing that they looked like, so I went with it. :)
I plan on finishing it up tomorrow. I'm planning on a third goblin in the corner, but I don't know. I'll have to see how it turns out.

Archer WIP 3

After much tinkering with the elf, I've decided to call it quits for the night. But not without taking a screencap to post here. I still need to do more with the water and add the rest of the elements that I plan to add in.

Part two of my WIP. I've got the basic lay of the land down. Her face has a little too much contrast in it, but I'll fix that later. I'll also add more in the environment. I just wanted to get the basic stuff in first. :)

Here's a screen cap of what I'm working on right now. If you squint and look towards the lower right, you'll see the line art for an elf squatting down and holding a bow. :3
I wanted to get more of the background established before I start painting the elf. I'm trying to get better at backgrounds and all that jazz.
On the right side is some color swatches. The pic was supposed to be really green, but since my last painting was really green and yellow I decided to try a hand at more of an autumn color theme.
When I started working on it, it dawned on me how ominous it looked so the foreground is going to be a bit more creepy and spooky the farther away you get from the sun light.
The dark shape in the bottom left will be water.
The photo at the bottom right is a reference photo. I'm not copying it directly, but it is there when needed. :)

A sketch I did not too long ago of a character design. It's a comic idea that I've kept writing and rewriting. Maybe eventually it'll see the light of day. :P

Here's the finished painting. I'll scan it a bit later for a better web version. I just can't get the photo to look quite right.

Lady and Tiger WIP Part 3

Since I posted parts 1 and 2 last night, I figured I'd post part three today. I'm working on the tiger now. It's not done in this picture. I tend to work in thin washes with acrylic paint, so I'm letting the tiger dry before building up an extra layer. It takes quite a bit to build up a decent orange over the greens and blues in the background.

Lady and Tiger WIP

Hello, all.
So yeah, I've been meaning to get a sketch blog together for a long time. Several factors have been obstructing my doing so for a while. I just got a new laptop, which helps matters immensely. Computer access is an important element to maintaining a blog, after all.
I would like to try to update daily, though that more than likely won't happen. So I'll just chalk it up to as often as possible. :)

First up is a work in progress. It's been a long while since I've tried a hand in acrylic painting. I've always enjoyed it and fancied myself as being fairly good at it, but for some reason I just don't do it often. I tend to float more towards digital painting. Less messy and more portable. I'm going to try to do more traditional paintings, though. I think my portfolio would benefit.

The working title for this is "Lady and Tiger". I've never been that great at titling my work. This is meant to be an experiment. It is on a 12"x16" canvas board. I was trying to go sort of minimalist on the background, using as little paint as possible to convey environment. For a lot of it I used paint splatters for the forest in the background with detail filled in later.
